3 Things Golf Tournaments Get Wrong With Branded Towels

3 Things Golf Tournaments Get Wrong With Branded Towels

You know the moment. The boxes arrive three days before your corporate golf day, you slice one open expecting glory, and instead you're holding a towel the size of a face washer with a logo that disappears the second it's folded over a bag. There's no hook. There's no clip. There's no way to fix it before Saturday.

We decorate and ship custom branded towels for golf events all over Australia, and the same three mistakes turn up in order requests again and again. Here's what they are and exactly how to spec around them.

Mistake 1: Ordering a Towel Built to Look Pretty, Not Clean a Club Face

The most common mistake with custom branded golf towels is choosing the fabric for how it photographs rather than how it cleans grooves. A golf towel gets dragged across muddy wedges, wet grips and sandy irons for four hours. If the fabric can't scrub and absorb, players stop using it, and a towel nobody uses is a logo nobody sees.

Sheared velour has a smooth, flat face that shows off fine artwork detail beautifully, which is exactly why it's popular for presentation gifts. On course, though, absorbency and scrubbing texture do the heavy lifting. Waffle-weave microfibre grabs dirt out of club grooves. Terry cotton loop pile soaks up moisture and keeps working when it's damp. Plenty of towels combine both, with a velour face for the branding and terry loops on the reverse for the dirty work.

Fabric Strength Best decoration fit Best use
Waffle-weave microfibre Textured surface pulls dirt from club grooves, dries fast Sublimation print, woven label Player towels for wet or sandy courses
Terry cotton (400 GSM+) Loop pile absorbs water, stays effective when damp Embroidery All-round tournament towels
Velour-face cotton Smooth surface shows crisp, detailed artwork Sublimation or embroidery Sponsor gifts, pro shop merch, presentation sets

Our honest take after years of doing these orders: if the towel is going on a player's bag, prioritise the working surface. If it's going in a sponsor gift box, the velour face earns its keep. Many events order both, one spec for the field and a dressier version for VIPs and sponsors. Same artwork, two jobs.

Watch the GSM number, not just the fabric name

GSM (grams per square metre) tells you how much fabric you're actually getting. For cotton golf towels, 400 to 550 GSM is the working range. Below 350 GSM a towel feels thin in the hand within seconds of pulling it from the packaging, and players notice. Microfibre runs lighter by nature, usually 200 to 300 GSM, and still performs because the fibre structure does the absorbing.

How Should a Branded Golf Towel Attach to the Bag?

A golf towel needs a built-in attachment method, either a metal grommet with a hook, a carabiner clip, or a centre slit for tri-fold designs. A towel with no attachment gets stuffed in a cart cup holder, left on the 14th tee, or never leaves the goodie bag at all. Attachment is the difference between a towel that travels with the player for two years and one that's lost by the back nine.

The three options that actually work:

  • Corner grommet and hook. A brass or gunmetal eyelet punched into one corner, paired with a swivel hook. The classic. Cheap to add, works on any bag.
  • Carabiner clip. Clips straight onto a bag ring or cart frame. Slightly bulkier, very hard to lose.
  • Centre slit (tri-fold). The towel folds in thirds and hangs over the bag with a slit that loops onto a clip, tour-style. This is what the pros' caddies carry, and players know it.

Here's the production reality most organisers never think about until the proof arrives. The grommet gets punched into a corner of the towel. If your artwork sits in that corner, the eyelet goes straight through the sponsor's logo. We flag this on artwork approval regularly. Keep decoration at least 5 cm clear of the grommet corner, and if you're running a tri-fold design, check where the fold lines land. We've seen artwork files where the main logo sat exactly on a fold, so the finished towel hung on the bag showing half a logo and a lot of blank fabric.

Where the logo should actually go

Think about the towel in its hanging state, not laid flat on a table. A tri-fold towel shows roughly the bottom third of one face while it's on the bag. That visible panel is your billboard. Put the tournament logo or headline sponsor there, and use the full flat face for secondary sponsors if you need the space. On a standard hook towel, position the logo in the lower half so it's readable while hanging.

Mistake 3: Picking a Size That Doesn't Suit a Golf Bag

The standard size for a custom golf towel in Australia is around 40 x 60 cm, with tri-fold caddie towels running larger at roughly 50 x 60 cm before folding. Go much smaller and you've ordered a gym towel that looks lost on a full-size staff bag. Go bigger and it drags on the ground, wraps around the bag in wind, and annoys the player enough to come off after one round.

A quick sizing guide:

  1. 30 x 50 cm. Compact hook towel. Fine for a budget player gift, but the logo area is small once it's hanging.
  2. 40 x 60 cm. The sweet spot. Big enough to work with, sized to sit properly against a cart bag.
  3. 50 x 60 cm tri-fold. The premium tour look. Costs more per unit, gets noticed, tends to stay on bags for years.

Colour deserves a sentence here too. White towels show every sponsor colour crisply and look terrible by the third hole on a wet course. Dark navy, black or forest green hide the grime and keep looking presentable in photos all day. If your logo needs a light background, a dark towel with a printed or embroidered light panel gets you both.

The Spec Sheet: What to Confirm Before You Order Custom Branded Golf Towels

Before you sign off on any order for custom branded golf towels in Australia, confirm these six things in writing:

  • Size: 40 x 60 cm standard, or 50 x 60 cm for tri-fold
  • Fabric and weight: terry cotton at 400 GSM or better, or waffle microfibre for wet courses
  • Attachment: grommet and hook, carabiner, or tri-fold slit. Never "none"
  • Artwork clearance: decoration kept clear of the grommet corner and fold lines
  • Decoration method: embroidery for a stitched, tactile finish, or sublimation for full-colour multi-sponsor artwork. Both hold up on course, so choose based on your artwork
  • Lead time: allow four to six weeks before your event date for production, decoration and delivery, longer around Christmas and peak golf season

On quantities, think past the players. A field of 144 covers the competitors, but volunteers, course staff, sponsor reps and the raffle table all put your branding on more bags. Custom decoration runs involve artwork setup, colour matching and quality checks across the batch, which is why minimum quantities exist. Rather than treating that number as a hurdle, use it. Leftover towels make first-rate client gifts, member giveaways and prizes for next year's monthly medal. A golf towel hangs on a bag for years, so every extra unit keeps earning impressions long after your event is done.

Common Questions About Custom Golf Towels

What size should a custom golf towel be?

A standard branded golf towel is around 40 x 60 cm, which hangs well on a cart or staff bag without dragging. Tri-fold caddie towels run larger, roughly 50 x 60 cm before folding.

What's the best material for a branded golf towel?

Terry cotton at 400 GSM or higher and waffle-weave microfibre are the two strongest performers on course. Cotton absorbs more moisture, while microfibre's texture is better at pulling dirt out of club grooves and dries faster between holes.

Should the logo be embroidered or printed on a golf towel?

Embroidery gives a stitched, dimensional finish that suits single logos and club crests, while sublimation printing handles full-colour, multi-sponsor artwork across the whole towel face. Both perform well in golf conditions, so let your artwork complexity decide.

How far in advance should I order towels for a golf tournament?

Allow four to six weeks before your event for production, custom decoration and delivery within Australia. Add buffer time if your event falls near Christmas or during peak corporate golf season.

What colour golf towel looks best with a sponsor logo?

Dark colours like navy, black and forest green hide course grime and stay presentable in event photos all day. If your logo needs a light background, choose a dark towel with a light printed or embroidered panel.

Do golf towels need a hook or grommet?

Yes. A golf towel without a grommet, carabiner or tri-fold slit can't attach to a bag, which means it gets left behind instead of travelling with the player. The attachment is what turns a giveaway into years of repeat brand exposure.
